Did you know every type of advertisement of baby food products is banned in India? And that too for the last 34 years? The man who made it possible is our 1st Hero of Healthy Hindustan — Dr. Arun Gupta.

A Pediatrician Who Saw Through the Marketing

Born in Punjab, Dr. Arun started his career in 1976 as a pediatrician in Jalandhar, interacting daily with newborns and mothers. After some years, he noticed an emerging trend of baby food products, mainly "Cerelac". He soon realized they were positioning it as a replacement for breastfeeding — and their sales agents, dressed as nurses, were distributing free samples in baby hospitals. Worse, a product meant for babies contained around 22g of sugar per 100g.

The Fight for Change

Instead of reacting emotionally, Dr. Arun took a systematic approach. He documented cases, collected evidence, and co-founded the Breastfeeding Promotion Network of India in 1991. After years of advocacy, he convinced the government to pass the Infant Milk Substitutes Act 1992 — which put a strict ban on advertising infant milk substitutes across India. Breastfeeding rates in India improved significantly as a result.
